** Summer is coming with 10 good reasons for DBpedia
------------------------------------------------------------
So, whatâs new at DBpedia? The second DBpedia newsletter informs you about technical developments and progress, new collaborations and DBpediaâs participation at the Google Summer of Code program (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=645494d375&e=38ebbaab53) . In collaboration with Springer Nature, we also offer a cool internship, so keep reading. Itâs worth it!
** 1. DBpedia API and SPARQL Endpoint hosting improvement
------------------------------------------------------------
For quite some time now - OpenLink Software provides the SPARQL Query Services and Linked Open Data publishing infrastructure for DBpedia in addition to their continuous infrastructure support. Due to investments in hardware and infrastructure, the endpoint received a service level up and is now more performant. Therefore, the DBpedia Community experienced far less troubles than before and complaints about an unstable endpoint service were reduced to a minimum. We, the DBpedia Association and the community are thankful to OpenLink for their efforts and continuous hosting of the main DBpedia endpoint. While this is good news, it is not a model for future growth, especially now that we will raise the amount of data hosted (e.g. by including Wikidata, GNL and Springer Nature). As a community we are still discussing new ways of institutional support for hosting as well as a commercial DBpedia API to generate income to cover the free service. Your feedback is welcome, either by
reply to this email or at the events or mailing lists.
** 2. DBpedia Goes GNL and Springer Nature
------------------------------------------------------------
The DBpedia Association had two exciting and prolific meetings with the German National Library (GNL), who publish the Integrated Authority File and Springer Nature (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=80d14bf480&e=38ebbaab53) (SciGraph (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=1b6e9597bb&e=38ebbaab53) ) to discuss new ways of collaboration. Both organisations were enthusiastic about DBpedia hosting their data in SPARQL endpoint, in the future. This is of great value for DBpedia users who will benefit from more interesting queries over several complementary datasets.
** 3. New Internship Opportunity - Smart Minds Wanted

** 5. Language Chapters - New Head Assigned
------------------------------------------------------------
Since we are currently underway to formalize the DBpedia chapters in a proper way, the DBpedia Board members decided to assign Harald Sack (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=13fa0323d7&e=38ebbaab53) (FIZ Karlsruhe â Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure) as lead of the German DBpedia for the time being. We are still looking for volunteers to support the creation of regional, language-specific and domain-specific chapters. At the moment DBpedia has around 15 language chapters, that are concerned with improving the extraction of data from language-specific Wikipedia versions. Check all details here: http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=6ccc954688&e=38ebbaab53
** 6. DBpedia Release 2016-10 (available soon)
------------------------------------------------------------
Another DBpedia release is dawning and will soon be published in full. The preliminary datasets are already available (2016-04 download (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=890d79863f&e=38ebbaab53) ) for the community. This release-cycle took somewhat longer than the last ones for multiple reasons:
1. We started extracting the full texts of each wiki page in addition to the abstracts in the NLP Interchange Format (NIF) providing the readable text structured in sections and paragraphs and all in-text links.
2. We are preparing a major overhaul of the data extraction procedure based on SPARK (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=e4f0e17ff4&e=38ebbaab53) and Unified Views (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=92fe164b33&e=38ebbaab53) in cooperation with the Semantic Web Company (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=5079e8eac7&e=38ebbaab53) which necessitates extended refactoring of the current code-base, but will shorten the release intervals immensely.
3. We focused on actively gathering incoming links of other datasets to return the favour by turning them around as outgoing links. This is an ongoing process, which will update the links on a monthly basis. Check here (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=5c2abc0fe5&e=38ebbaab53) for our progress.
Stay tuned for updates, they are coming soon.
** 7. DBpedia Spotlight 1.0 - New Version Available To Test
------------------------------------------------------------
Released in 2011, DBpedia Spotlight (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=0bd7568c2a&e=38ebbaab53) is an NLP tool for automatically annotating mentions of DBpedia resources in text, providing a solution for linking unstructured information sources to the Linked Open Data cloud through DBpedia.
DBpedia Spotlight 1.0 is NOW AVAILABLE TO TEST. You are very welcome to test Spotlight v1.0 (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=962236771d&e=38ebbaab53.) and keep us posted about what you think.
So what is new?
First of all, we are pleased to announce that we have a new storage (around 8 tb) for the DBpedia Spotlight entity extraction models. It is organized by the following categories: Language, DBpedia version and DBpedia Spotlight Approach. This data is the result of running Wikipedia Stats Extractor/Model-Quickstarter (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=2b9e439cb9&e=38ebbaab53) and Lucene-Quickstarter (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=af610c3397&e=38ebbaab53) on the latest Wikipedia dumps. You find more informationhere. (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=db2d2aeec3&e=38ebbaab53)
Secondly, all DBpedia Spotlight extraction tools are now available in Docker. Just follow the instructions at Model quickstarter (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=0489de1cc0&e=38ebbaab53) and Lucene quickstarter (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=db46d00397&e=38ebbaab53) .
** 8. DBpedia Publications - May The Tag Be With You
------------------------------------------------------------
Publications about DBpedia are a good way to get informed about DBpedia and to spread the word about current developments. It is also an opportunity to share your work with the DBpedia Community. As we want to foster the exposition of DBpedia related publications and motivate people to share their works about DBpedia, we established a new way to increase their visibility via BibSonomy. From now on, publications displayed on the DBpedia website are filtered in 3 categories (depending on their tags in BibSonomy). Category one comprises curated publications (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=6abbf5ce5c&e=38ebbaab53) directly about DBpedia. The second category constitutes journal and conference publications using DBpedia, being curated by our scientific community members. They can be found in the Journal and Conference Publications List. (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=25e7fe38a8&e=38ebbaab53) Use the dbpedia_scipub tag
in Bibsonomy to feed your contribution into this list of peer-reviewed top publications. Last but not least, any other publications including bookmarks to web pages generated by the DBpedia Community are displayed in the Community Publications List (http://dbpedia.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9089abb541e9463749b7d284d&id=284cf353c6&e=38ebbaab53) as soon as they are tagged with dbpedia in BibSonomy. If you want to have your publications being displayed on the DBpedia website, letâs start tagging!
